  • Notes
    • Blind since age 21, he still served as the County Tax Collector and Assessor for Austin County, Texas.
In the 1840 Alabama census, H.G.W. CLOUD is counted in Montgomery Co. on page 172.  Listed in the Austin County, TX Censuses of 1850 and 1860 as 40 and 50 years of age with birthplace Georgia.
H.G.W.'s obituary, sent by Lura Black December 1999.
.....  "It says (this is written along the side)
'The __________ paper last week.   ___   __ .... I also enclose a fune (??it is scribbled and could be funeral)

Mary Lou Freeman wrote (July 8, 2008): "I have the original newspaper obit that was in the Bible belonging to Mary Black with part of the obit torn off - it appears to have been sent to the family from Mrs. Farr ( John M.- Sister)."
At the top of the obit is written:
      ---
      Obit of
      HGW Cloud
      (John M. Cloud (Black)'s father)
                       1897
Maybe a portion of the note was chopped off.  Maybe she also enclosed a funeral announcement that might be floating around somewhere.  The name of the paper looks like it could be Warsaw or Worso _ _ or Morso _ _.
Henry George Washington's obit was dated August 7, 1897.  The blanks are approximately how many words I believe to be missing from the torn area.

have been written in the Dooms-
      day Book and erstwhile mortals
pass before the throne of God for
      judgment.
         "Uncle Wash's" death occurred
in Groesbeck Thursday at 4:20 a.
m., he having moved there four
months ago with his daughter, Mrs.
Farr.  He was born in Alabama,
March 14, 1810 and has been a resi-
dent of this section of Texas since
March 1846, the majority of that
time being spent in Waller county.
When only twenty one years old
he was stricken blind and yet bur-
      dened with this overwhelming cal-
amity he managed to round out a
life of industry and worth, even
serving Austin county from 1851 -
53 as tax assessor and collector.
He leaves but two children, Mrs.
S.T. Farr of Groesbeck and John
      Cloud of Paul's Valley, I. T.  His
      remains were shipped here on
      the early morning train yesterday,
and the funeral took place at 4:00
in the afternoon to the old Cloud
place two miles northwest of the
city.  Peace be unto his ashes and
      rest unto his soul.
(Lura's Notes:  Aug 7, 1897, was the date of his obituary, which says he died on Thursday.  In 1897, Thursday would have been Aug 5. The article was published in a newspaper of the city near the old Cloud place.  I know the article indicates that he was born in Alabama, but, all the censuses (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880) indicate he was born in Georgia.  Plus information we have would indicate that at least 3 children born after HGW were also born in Georgia.)
(Also from this obit, we can conclude that JM changed his name from Cloud to Black prior to the death of HGW and that at the time of HGW's death, JM was living in Paul's Valley, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). So, whatever dastardly deed JM performed (that would make him change his name), it would seem to have occurred prior to Aug 1897. The obit also indicates that only two of his children were living - Bettie (Mrs. Farr) and JM.  Would suspect that the obit was written by Bettie or Annie (JM's wife).)
(question -- "Mrs. S.T. Farr" ... wouldn't that be Sarah Texana Cloud who married Joseph FARR rather than Bettie CLOUD?)
