  • Notes
    • Excerpts from "The Weekly Bulletin" of Troy, Illinois, Thursday, February 25 1875.
      "REMINISCENCES OF SAMUEL SEYBOLD, Esq."
      (Samuel is the son of Jasper & Rebekah's son Robert)  (Note, this article is copied into the book "History of Madison County, Illinois", pub 1882, p. 77.)
      " .... In the latter part of the 16th century there lived a boy by the name of Jasper Seybold, on the river Rhine in Germany, when born is not known.  In the year 1717 he married a German girl .... In 1718 they had a son born, and called his name Jasper Seybold, Jr.  He was my grandfather.  My great grandfather lived to have sons and daughters.  In 1732, the year Geo. Washington was born, he concluded to go west to the New World, called North America.  They took shipping at Amsterdam, on a small ship which was over-crowded with emigrants. They had a long voyage, the water became scarce and the provisions stale, which caused a pestilence on board, which killed all the Seybolds, except Jasper, Jr., my grandfather.  The ship finally sailed into the Chesapeake Bay, and landed at or near a place called Dumfries.
      The captain of the ship bound my grandfather to a planter for seven years for his passage.  There was a girl named Alcey Clendening, of Scotch descent, also bound to a tailor for her passage.  They both became free about the same time.  They concluded to marry, and in 1740 went on a claim to which they were entitled to, 400 acres of land by the laws of Virginia, which was selected at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain, now in the county of Louden, where they baked their first hoe-cake on a flat stone for want of other culinary conveniences.  On this claim they lived to have twelve sons and two daughters .........lies, except one girl and two sons.  My father, Robt. Seybold, born March 12th, 1760, was the youngest of these sons, nine of whom drew pensions for services in the Revolutionary War, and I have never known one of the name disloyal, convicted of a crime, or to become rich.
      ==================================================================
      Shirley Rodgers Hart questions some of the above in her paper "Jasper Seybold and Rebekah Clendennen" written August 4th 1987.  She says (1) The Seybolds did not remove to Virginia until at least 1754 and (2) Quaker records list only 8 sons and 2 daughters.  A Joseph Seybold is listed, but he is not listed as a son.  (3) Robert Seybold was not the youngest son and (4) no record has been found showing that any of the sons drew a pension for Revolutionary War service.
      ==================================================================
      One researcher,  Edith Lucile (Stewart) Vennin, 4th great granddaughter of Jasper and Rebekah, in the LDS Archives states that both Jasper and Rebekah were born in Bavaria.

      "Robert of South Fork Preparative Meeting reported by that meeting as "guilty of fornication" he denies it  At the meeting held 27-4-1786 is the following minute  Robert SEYBOLD of South Fork PM who was reported as "guilty of fornication" by that meeting on 27-2-1786 (which he denied) "having some time since removed over the Allegany Mountains and nothing having been heard from him since is now disowned.

      The following is excerpted from the paper "Jasper  Seybold and Rebekah Clendennen" by Shirley Rodgers Hart written August 4th 1987.
      Jasper and Rebekah were Quakers and resided in the Township of West Marlborough, County of Chester, Province of Pennsylvania.  They were married there in the London Grove Meeting House under auspices of New Garden Monthly Meeting.
      ....for the surname for Rebekah, some sources say Clendennen (Clendinen / Clendenon / Clendenning / Glendenning, etc.) was Scotch and some say Irish.
