Message: Tolbert (Talbot) Church is located on Co. Rd. 45 about 5 miles north of Headland. This church was started as a church and school in 1855. The land was deeded in 1857 by Henry Cloud. The church was orginally named for a prominent pastor in the area, Edmund Talbot. Cloud was the brother of Sarah Cloud Shelley, wife of Malachi Shelley. Representing the Church on the deed were 2 deacons, William Peak and James Mixon. Witnessed by Haculiah McMath and Thomas Eubanks. It was originally known by the name, "Missionary Baptist Church of Talbot".
Malachi and Betsy (Cloud) Shelley are both buried at the cemetery at Tolbert Church in Henry County, AL. Malachi and his brother Reubin moved to Henry CO. around 1850-51. Sarah Cloud along with John M. Lucinda and Catherine also show up on the census in Henry Co. next to Malachi. Henry Cloud Patented 80 acres of land in Henry County and deeded 10 acres to Tolbert Church before moving back to GA. The other 30 acres also ended up in possession of the Church. The other 40 acres went to Betsy's son, Malachi Pope Shelley. We have a picture of Betsy showing definite Indian features."
