- Lillie was reared in Buckhorn, Texas and attended the Buckhorn Public school and later the Chappell Hill Female College. After her marriage to A.J. Smith, she resided in Bellville. Her husband passed away at the age of 45 years on July 15, 1935 and she never re-married. Her son, A.J. Smith II built a home for her next to his own at 720 S. Bell in Bellville where she resided until she was moved to a nursing home where she died peacefully in her sleep, 10-18-1975. Most of her time up until 1956 was spent taking care of her invalid daughter Bernice Smith who died at the age of 39 from rheumatoid arthritis and pneumonia. She had spent some earlier years as a nurse at the Bellville hospital where she introduced Sibyl Cloyd, a young nurse who worked with Lillie to her son, A.J. Sibyl & AJ were later married in 1939. Also, Lillie helped run a boarding house during the depression years. For awhile, the family moved to Brownwood,Texas where Lillie's mother and father, Emma and William Hoffman, were living. She had to take care of them for a few years. Lillie was a kind-hearted person who wore her hair in a long-single braid which she coiled up at the back of her head. She belonged to the Full Gospel Church of Bellville & also attended the Buckhorn church. She loved to tell the stories of her grandfather, Captain James Bell Stephenson and had some old tin type pictures of him and his family which were passed down to the compiler of this history.
